Day to day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at our stunning destination on the banks of the Matlabas River beneath the dramatic mountains of the Waterberg. After settling into your luxury tent, enjoy lunch and time to relax on the deck or by the private pool.
In the afternoon, head out on your first game drive across the plains and valleys of Marataba Private Game Reserve. Wildlife sightings may include White Rhino, African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, Kudu, and Impala, while your guide introduces the landscapes and conservation efforts of the reserve.
Return to the residence in the evening for dinner under the stars.
Day 2: Exploring Marataba
Begin the day with an early morning game drive as the bush comes to life. The varied landscapes of Marataba, from open plains to rocky hills and river valleys, support a wide range of wildlife and birdlife.
In the afternoon, focus shifts to rhino conservation during a dedicated Rhino Focus Drive. Your guide explains how rhinos are monitored and identified through ear-notching patterns and tracking techniques. These drives provide insight into the ongoing work required to protect rhino populations within the park.
Dinner is enjoyed back at the residence, often around the fire deck overlooking the river.
Day 3: Rhino Conservation Experience
This morning is the highlight of the safari: a Rhino Conservation Activity with a specialist veterinary team. Taking place during the cooler months between April and September, these interventions form part of Marataba’s long-term rhino monitoring programme.
Guests may observe and assist conservation professionals during procedures such as ear-notching for identification, fitting tracking collars or bracelets, collecting blood and tissue samples, and inserting microchips used for DNA registration. Samples are submitted to the RhODIS (Rhinoceros DNA Index System), a national database used in wildlife crime investigations.
Once the work is completed, the rhino’s blindfold is removed and the tranquilliser reversed, allowing the animal to return safely to the wild.
In the evening, enjoy a game drive followed by a bush dinner. Those who wish may continue with an optional late-night extension to experience the nocturnal wildlife of Marataba Private Game Reserve. With luck, the darkness may reveal elusive species such as Brown Hyena and Leopard, alongside other night-active animals that emerge after sunset.
Day 4: River and plains
Enjoy a relaxed morning at the residence or join an optional early game drive to search for wildlife along the river valleys and grasslands.
In the afternoon, head out on another safari drive before continuing onto the Matlabas River for a boat safari. This water-based experience offers a different perspective of the reserve, drifting quietly past Hippopotamus, waterbirds, and wildlife coming down to drink along the banks.
Return to camp for dinner and another evening beneath the clear Waterberg skies.
Day 5: Walking the Wilderness
This morning, leave the vehicle behind for a guided bush walk through the reserve. Accompanied by an experienced guide, spend several hours exploring the bush on foot, learning to interpret tracks, animal signs, and plant life while moving quietly through the landscape. The walk concludes with a memorable bush breakfast in the wilderness.
After time to relax at the residence, head out for a final afternoon game drive. As the sun sets behind the Waterberg mountains, enjoy classic safari moments with sundowners in the bush before returning to camp for your last evening.
Day 6: Departure
Enjoy a final short morning game drive across the reserve, offering one last chance to encounter Marataba’s wildlife.
Return to Marataba Residence for breakfast before departing, taking with you a deeper understanding of rhino conservation and the landscapes of the Waterberg.
